Studios wise up to stuffy critics

Paramount suits are only letting a few select movie critics see “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.”

Seems they’re confident in their product. They know it will be hammered by critics.

Maybe so, but the critical community is far more diverse than ever before, and even generally acknowledged duds muster a few kind words.

But the studio’s decision, according to Variety, stems from the massive divide between public and critics that blew up over “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”

I’ve always prided myself for praising quality junk like “Tremors” as much as Oscar-worthy films. Maybe more.

But I’ve never felt the disconnect between my own tastes and those belonging to the movie goers around me than while watching “Revenge of the Fallen.”

So maybe Paramount has a point with “G.I. Joe.” But if I were an actor in the film, I wouldn’t be proud of the fact that the studio knows what it has on its hands.

This might be one of those cheesey fun movies. I plan on seeing it but only if the military and America are spared from criticism. As a huge fan of G.I. Joe back when I was a kid, I never thought I’d see the day of a live action movie. Now that I know about some of the changes I’m slightly worried. I don’t want to get sucker-punched by this one. When do you expect to have a review up?

Not sure when I’ll be able to see it … I’m falling behind on my flicks, so I’ll do the best I can! Still wanna see “Orphan” — I’m a sucker for any horror movie that looks north of terrible.

While Revenge of the Fallen could/should have been much better, I still enjoyed it for what it was. The early reviews for GI Joe are coming in much better that I would have though when looking at the trailer. The Tomato meter at Rotten Tomatoes is at 91%, so I will try and catch it opening weekend. Hope it will deliver.

Dustin,

Don’t get fooled by the RT rating … the studio picked ’soft’ critics only to screen their film … that’s why the rating is so high.

That rating will plummet faster than Eddie Murphy’s credibility has in the last 2 years by the end of the week…

Christian, I don’t think “Orphan” is about mid-equator, not north. In fact, it might be somewhere below the equator… :-) But as I stated frankly in my review, I am not a fan of horror. As someone who is much more well versed in the genre, I will be interested to find out what you think of it.

oops! That should read, “I think it’s about mid-equator.” Good grief. I need to stop with the cutesy crap and just get to the point. I really didn’t like the film “Orphan.”

And as a side note, “Transformers: Revenge” insulted my intelligence and Michael Bay should be ashamed of himself.

And I will follow that up with, I love “Tremors.”
