Jennifer Lynch‘s new film, “Surveillance,“ casts a number of actors, including “Third Rock from the Sun“ star French Stewart and “SNL“ veteran Cheri Oteri, starkly against type.

“It’s been my experience that the funnier someone is, the sadder and darker they are,” she says. So tapping comic performers, who also happen to be good actors, for serious roles made sense to her.

One “Surveillance” star who doesn’t have a type to cast against is Bill Pullman, who plays one of the FBI agents tracking down the film’s serial killers.

“Bill is just a total chameleon,“ she says. “It’s why he’s not as famous [as other actors] He‘s so believable each time you see him you think, ’maybe that’s really him.’”

Lynch’s father, “Eraserhead” auteur David Lynch, served as an executive producer on “Surveillance.”

She wasn’t sure about using the connection to help her return to movie making, but she understands when people connect the two in a negative way.

“The only time it bothers me is when it gets to that hurtful, petty stage -the only real reason I do what I do is because I’m his daughter,” she says. “I’m not in control of the world.”

After “Boxing Helena,” Lynch suffered a serious car crash and raised a child as a single parent. But audiences won’t have to wait more than a decade to see Lynch’s next film project. Her “Surveillance” follow-up, “Hisss,” hits theaters next year.

The film won’t skimp on the gore.

“I love a good decapitation, a good mess,” she says, even though she doesn’t consider “Surveillance” a horror film despite its bloodletting.

“It tends to be more horrifying because we care about the people involved,” she says.
