Rob Zombie won me over with his “Rejects.”
Zombie, the hard rocker turned horror director, created “House of 1000 Corpses” in 2003 as his entry into the film business. But I started taking him seriously after seeing “The Devil’s Rejects,” a sequel of sorts to the uncompromising “Corpses.”
“Rejects” delivered shocks, gore and a unique spin on the horror genre – southern trash chills. Clearly, Zombie was on to something here.
But his third film, the horror remake “Halloween,” found him in creative free fall.
The scare-free reboot packed some of Zombie’s signature bits – like the dysfunctional family at the heart of Michael Myers’ killer instincts. But he left out all the mystery behind the masked freak.
Now, Zombie’s back, and he promises “Halloween II” is much closer to his original vision.
I chatted with Zombie last week, along with his lovely bride Sheri Moon Zombie, for a new story up over at boxoffice.com. Smart guy, to be sure. And confident as heck.
“Halloween II” isn’t being screened for critics, usually a sign that the film in question is a dud. But studios rarely screen horror films these days, and it isn’t always a sign of a stinker.
