This week’s best DVD releases both underwhelmed at the box office earlier this year.
That’s a shame, since each deserved a far better fate.
“Adventureland,” from the director of “Superbad,” is a smart and nostalgic comedy about a young man caught between college and the real world. Naturally, he ends up slaving away at an amusement park where he meets Kristen Stewart, the “Twilight” starlet.
Not a bad gig if you can get it.
In “Duplicity,” Clive Owen reteams with Julia Roberts for an intricate spy drama with plenty of sizzle. It’s the first meaty role for Roberts in a spell, and these kinds of films provide the perfect showcase for Owen’s roguish charms.
So why did it sputter at the box office? Maybe Roberts’ clout with audiences is a thing of the past, or people sensed a story that proved far too complicated for its own good.
Either way, both are satisfying rentals for a late summer night.
