Dream cast shuffled off to DVD

Who wouldn’t want to watch a movie starring Morgan Freeman, William H. Macy, Christopher Walken and Marcia Gay Harden?

Movie goers, apparently.

The folks behind “The Maiden Heist,” a comedy starring those aforementioned actors, is heading straight to DVD Oct. 27.

NPR has the sad story behind the film’s inglorious treatment.

Poor Macy. Lately, his films have been rocketing straight to DVD. I interviewed him a few years ago and he spoke about the insecurity which drives his career. He never knows if his next assignment will be his last.

I laughed when he said that. How silly. He’s a great actor who works all the time.

Now, I can understand what he meant.

Funny how Mr. Macy appeared in his biggest hit (but also one of his biggest stinkers) Wild Hogs only 2 1/2 years ago, yet the movies he’s made since have struggled to get released/seen; strange business indeed…

I remember seeing him on The Tonight Show twelve or thirteen years ago, talking about how he had been trying for years to break in and that he was just now getting recognition. This was after “Fargo” and “Air Force One” and probably something else I’m not gonna bother to IMDB. I remember that so well because I think that was the moment it occured to me that most actors have to work their asses off to get where they are, and that even a lot of them who do never make it.

If I were to console Macy, I’d point out that all but the top of the A list seem vunerable to the DVD shelf these days. I went to the video store the other day and was almost shocked by the number of titles I’d never heard of that were starring big name actors who a few years ago would have been invulnerable to being in a straight to video movie. Sign of the times, I suppose.

The industry is changing, James, and if I was a working actor I’d be pretty scared.

Or … willing to adjust what I consider “famous” to include straight to DVD fare. On the plus side, some pretty good films are rocketing to DVD … and hopefully people will notice them.
