‘Corn’ reboot to bash religion anew?

‘Corn’ reboot to bash religion anew?

September 9, 2009

It’s hardly surprising to hear that Stephen King’s “Children of the Corn” is heading toward Remakeville.

Is there a mediocre ’80s movie not being rebooted?

But this one promises to up the ante on King’s original story – that of a boy preacher who coaxes his young flock toward evil deeds. Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” will do the adaptation honors.

Check out this quote from Bob Weinstein, the head of Dimension Films which is remaking the 1984 New World Pictures film:

“We felt the New World film was a missed opportunity,” Weinstein said. “If you read the short story, it’s got such a strong feeling to it and there’s this religious overtone to it as well. We are bringing something new to the story.”

Let’s just say for the record that filmmakers can mock religion – or any institution for that matter. But it seems odd that Hollywood feels the need to smack Christianity around over and again while other religions skate on by.

And anyone who saw “Stephen King’s The Mist” knows how heavy handed Hollywood can be when interpreting his spiritually themed yarns.

Animal Planet’s Whale Wars glorifies environmental radicals who not only vandalize property with butyric acid bombs but recklessly endanger human life. While whaling for science and food source is a horrific industry, there are other less radically violent ways to end this practice.
