Aren’t a bunch of beautiful, scantily clad co-eds enough to satiate the horror hounds?
Apparently not, given “Sorority Row’s” weak opening weekend.
The film came in sixth, earning a meager $5.26 million on 2,665 screens, according to Boxofficemojo.com.
A movie insider told me recently that today’s horror crowd wants to see young, nubile types in extreme peril, pointing to the success of “The Final Destination” and the failure of “Halloween II.”
“Sorority Row” seems scientifically designed to appease the horror base – slasher thrills and beautiful actors seemingly abound (have yet to see the new film, held back from critics last week).
And yet it flopped.
Hollywood makes it tough to predict the hits from the flops. Horror movie fans make that crystal ball gazing even harder.

Could it be that a film about young girls getting murdered one by one is just too misogynistic? If both men and women were in the same situation and just as likely get snuffed, then the scantily clad fems are bonus eye candy (well, for me, anyway), but the meaning changes completely when it’s just women who are getting snuffed.
I’m not a horror fan, so I’m not familiar with the genre. I often hear women complaining about women often being the target of violence in movies and have been a bit perplexed by it. Maybe it’s the horror movies they’re referring too?
Wow. With that line up of stars it’s really shocking.
To quote Toto- A movie insider told me recently that today’s horror crowd wants to see young, nubile types in extreme peril, pointing to the success of “The Final Destination” and the failure of “Halloween II.”
A friend told me the other day that she was looking forward to Final Destination in 3D. She loves the series, mostly because of “how many interesting ways people die.” Probably not so much on lingerie scenes.
I can’t stand to watch the series because of how close it resembles possible death. This is what she’s been looking forward to every horror movie to ever come out. Ever see a cat’s eyes get bigger when it spots a small moving object on the floor? This is her when waiting in anticipation for big scene of gore. You will never hear her say anything in a movie except the occasional “Oh!” which comes from approval of a bloody scene. Outside of your site, she’s probably the most critical person on the horror genre I know and I always get her opinion.
