Ferrell’s Funnyordie.com faux pas

Ferrell’s Funnyordie.com faux pas

semi pro

Will Ferrell could use a hit after the Hydrogen bomb that was “Land of the Lost.”

His latest comedy clip won’t help him.

Ferrell, the co-founder of the occasionally hilarious funnyordie.com, has just posted a new video mocking insurance company workers (hat tip: KyleSmithOnline.com)

It’s not a particularly funny bit, and it’s also rather unwise to sidle up to the current health reform movement when each new poll on the subject shows a greater majority of Americans oppose it.

You know, the Americans who pay good money to see movies like “Land of the Lost” or “Semi-Pro.”

Or not.

Movie stars are on the decline, and comedy movie stars in particular tend to have a shorter than average shelf life.

Just ask Jim Carrey.

So it’s not the sharpest idea to cut a video getting into the current health care fray.

It’s also possible Ferrell’s recent decline has to do with his public image.

Even President George W. Bush supporters chuckled over Ferrell’s imitation of the leader on “Saturday Night Live.” But when he reprised the role for a Broadway show earlier this year just as Bush was leaving office, it smacked of kicking someone when they’re down.

And worse, every decent Bush joke has already been told.

So Ferrell’s newest funnyordie.com may win him some new fans. It might even go viral. But it ultimately doesn’t serve him well as a bankable movie star.

By using the same style as the “I am Barack Obama” and “I Pledge…”, this video only manages to mock earnest actors attempting to enlighten us gun-totin’, bible-thumpin’ red staters. Boy, them pretty people sure are good at pretending to be concerned. Oops!

Allahpundit at HotAir put it best – Ferrell shouldn’t be telling anyone they are overpaid. He routinely gets $20 million for films. The few that do register as hits (nothing the last two or three years outside of Stepbrothers) barely cross the $100 million threshold, meaning he’s pocketing a fifth of the gross himself. I’d like to compare that take with what the average exec at an insurance company pockets.

The evidence seems to show, that if your career has hit the skids, then start boosting leftist causes. It worked for Penn, it worked for Clooney and obviously it soemthing Ferrell is taking a crack at.

Personally, I think he’s a bit late. When it was imperative that the evil Bushitler be defeated, it was okay to blow your movie investment money on a “left only” audience. Those days are rapidly coming to a close. The easy money has dried up and The One is in power.
