Horror movie remakes are raining down on us, but one of the upcoming flicks actually looks promising.
The reboots of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Stepfather,” the latter hitting theaters this weekend sans critics’ screenings, hardly get my heart beat racing.
Both seem like mere bean counting exercises, although casting Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger is an inspired choice.
But the remake of George A. Romero’s non-zombie classic “The Crazies” caught my interest.
Or, rather, the film’s trailer did.
The new movie, coming out in February 2010, stars the underrated Timothy Olyphant as a man trapped in a world where people are going mad.
Hardly the most original premise, mind you. But the trailer is quite effective, featuring the expected shocks and a musical bed that caught me by surprise.
And the original’s military subplot will likely be part of any new feature, given the tenor of today’s Hollywood.

I agree with you re: Jackie Earle Haley. That is the only reason I am the slightest bit interested in the remake (well, that and the fact that I consider NOES to be one of the most overrated horror franchises of all time and therefore felt no “Halloween-esque” assault on decency by the remake). Seriously, the third installment was the only decent one.
Kelly Link was a tour de force in Watchmen. He also stole the show in Semi-Pro.
