Remember the hue and cry from parents over the coarse PG-13 comedies “Year One” and “Land of the Lost” over the summer?
Now, some parents are upset that “Where the Wild Things Are” isn’t the transcendent experience they remember from the slim source material.
It’s dark. And cynical. And it’s not the enchanting time at the movies they got from “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.”
They have a point. The new film, which earned roughly $32 million in its first weekend of release, isn’t the kind of cotton candy confection the kiddies were expecting.
It’s a complicated story dealing with heavy issues best appreciated by older audiences – even if it doesn’t quite succeed.
Good.
Not every children’s film needs to talk down to its audience. But with parents disappointed over “Wild Thing’s” approach to the material it’s a little less likely another director will take chances with future kids stories.

Of course Hollywood will take chances with future movies like WTWTA. It made over 30 million dollars! Money talks.
