Great movie poster art: ‘Invictus’

invictus-poster

It’s been too long since a great movie poster came our way.

Maybe I’m missing a few winners, but one of the last killer posters that comes quickly to mind is the goofy portrait of Steve Carell for “The 40-year-old Virgin.”

Now, Warner Bros. reminds us what a great movie poster looks like with its one-sheet for Clint Eastwood’s upcoming drama, “Invictus.”

Invictus,” which tells the true story of South African President Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) and his bond with a rugby player (Matt Damon), hits theaters Dec. 11.

The poster is great. The trailer…not so much. I have never been a Matt Damon fan and the bits of the trailer that contain his accent threaten to push me over the edge from “indifferent” to “hostile.”

Yeah, the trailer is lackluster. The film clearly goes one of two ways – Oscar glory to the nth degree as it replays a remarkable true life story, or a shameless play on our emotions regarding the healing of race issues in the country.

I fear the latter – Eastwood has a sentimental streak that often hurts his films.
