See ya, ‘Saw’

See ya, ‘Saw’

Could this be the end of the “Saw” franchise?

The sixth installment in the money-printing franchise came in fifth place over the weekend – the Halloween weekend.

There’s already chatter about a seventh “Saw,” and this one could be in 3-D. But that’s simply a matter of bean counters and number crunchers talking.

The franchise’s lack of star power or fat budgets translate into a profitable enterprise even with diminishing results.

But as a cultural touchstone and must-see movie event come All Hallows Eve, it could be goodnight, Gracie.

An end to the “Saw” franchise? Wow, Christmas is coming early this year.

The first one was pretty good, both as a horror movie and as a morality tale. But the sequels basically just exploited the concept to make soulless snuff films (sole exception: Saw 3, with its sympathetic performance by Angus MacFadyen as a man tortured by the death of his son).

Since I liked the first one so much, I was extremely disappointed by how fast the Saw films went downhill. Profitable or not, I gave up on them long ago, and I hope they don’t make any more.

Everyone that I know who saw this latest one thought it was good. A big up from the last few. I think what has happened though is in the past couple of years there have been close to no horror films released in October. So the Saw films would come in and clean up. The difference this year is that Paranormal Activity is the big Halloween hit so Saw gets shoved to the side. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do make at least one more in 3-D but it surprises me the studios don’t release more horror films this time of year. I know it sounds like a given but outside of Lionsgate no one else was paying attention for the longest time.
