Even the biggest Christmas stocking can’t hold a new flat panel TV or Blu-ray player.
So the next best thing is filling stockings up with classic DVDs to appease the hardcore movie lover in your life.
But be warned – a few of the items below still won’t fit in any conventional red stocking. But it’s the thought that counts, right?
- “Forrest Gump: Sapphire Series” (Blu-ray) – Forget all about that “boh-ox of choh-cah-lates” stuff and savor a transformative performance by Tom Hanks.
- “The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collection Edition” – Just in case you don’t have it already on your DVD shelf – what are the chances of that?
- “Chinatown: Centennial Collection” – Yes, director Roman Polanski may spend the holidays either in jail or under house arrest. But that doesn’t change the fact that his 1974 film noir classic stands up to repeated viewings.
- “Gone With The Wind 70th Anniversary Edition” – File this one under the “Oz” category, with the films’ respective studios taking full advantage of one new anniversary after another. But don’t let marketing ambitions distract you from one of Hollywood’s great romances – and maybe the best parting shot ever uttered by a leading man.
- “North by Northwest: 50th Anniversary Edition” (DVD and Blu-ray) – The perfect introduction to Alfred Hitchock, and one of the best way to show today’s whipper-snappers what a real movie star looks like.
- “The Paul Newman Tribute Collection” – The 13-film collection, released shortly after the acting legend’s passing, features “The Long Hot Summer,” “The Hustler,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and, inexplicably, “Rally ‘Round the Flag Boys!”
