Making a micro budget documentary about Hollywood or its more famous denizens?

Dial up Kevin Smith.

The “Clerks” writer/director recently appeared in both “Official Rejection” and “Don’t You Forget About Me,” two no-budget documentaries about the film festival circuit and director John Hughes, respectively.

A director of Smith’s clout doesn’t have to bother talking with unknown documentarians, but he graciously gave face time to the minds behind both films. He’s got the humble Jersey boy shtick down cold, apparently.

But oh, man, does his new film look awful.

“Cop Out,” originally called “A Couple of Dicks,” would be stale even if we hadn’t seen “Lethal Weapon,” “Beverly Hills Cop” and a half dozen other mismatched buddy cop movies before. Yikes.

In Smith’s defense, he didn’t write the film. He’s just a director for hire this time which helps explain the leaden jokes in the trailer.

Let’s hope its the rare case where the trailer doesn’t do the film justice.

UPDATE: Apparently, WWTW isn’t alone with this sentiment.

My, did Willis sleep through that one.

Amazing, Willis isn’t far off his prime and still can’t find a decent role from anyone.

Willis doesn’t have great range, but when he’s in his comfort zone he brings considerable screen presence to a film. But yeah, he simply can’t find the roles that coincide with his sweet spot.

Willis is what he is – while extremely charismatic, even invigorating at times to watch, he plays himself like a John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and like those guys, he can actually act.

Now he’s reduced to straight-man to a SNL washup in a Kevin Smith movie. Lets hope he was doing this for fun.
