Not to drag out this thread – but I actually AM dragging out this thread: I agree.

Like our elected officials, there seems to be a built-in diminish on returns for long-time celebrities – they coast on the earned plaudits early in their career until they reach (and often pass) a point where their embarrassing behaviour begins to undue the respect they once achieved.

Is this what happens when someone is on the public scene too long … or gets too famous? Not that Ebert is famous-famous, but he’s clearly a legend in film circles. Sad.

I’m just surprised that one with serious health problems of their own would ridicule that of another. Ebert’s level of acrimony has risen to alarming and disappointing levels.

I wasn’t that offended – just thought the jokes were especially lame. Of course, we know the reaction if Limbaugh had done this to Ebert. Besides, does Ebert have any room to call someone on their weight?

One of the commenters on the Politico item you linked to thinks that Ebert should hook up with Siskel again.

I certainly don’t endorse that kind of humor, though.
