The commentary tracks included on DVDs and Blu-rays are typically for the hard-core movie buff.
They let the directors and actors break down the movie in question, sometimes to a detail even the actor’s parents might find a bit … dull.
And then there’s the commentary track accompanying “Deep in the Valley,” a new DVD starring Tracey Morgan, Chris Platt (“Parks and Recreation”) and Denise Richards.
The film itself is boilerplate sex comedy, the tale of two buds who enter a bizarre portal and wind up in a world “straight out of an adult film,” as the press release says.
While the movie may be forgettable, the commentary track sure isn’t. For one thing, it’s not just audio but video.
And, you guessed it, the woman providing the commentary, former Playboy TV Gadget Girl Christine Nguyen, takes off her clothes midway through the film.
WWTW isn’t sure naked commentaries are the wave of the future, but it’s a safe bet sales of “War of the Roses” will plummet if director Danny De Vito jumps on the trend.

The best DVD commentary I ever heard — or at least the most entertaining — was for the Rundown. Director Peter Berg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson provided insight into the making of the film while being genuinely hilarious.
I’m partial to the commentary for Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog, titled Commentary: The Musical.
How about the commentary from “Used Cars” with Kurt Russell, Bob Gale, and Robert Zemeckis? It’s almost as funny as the movie itself.
I think that matt and trey do a great job, but they don’t do thorough commentaries anymore.
My single most favored commentary was from Firefly, episode nine, titled “war stories,” with alan tudyk, and nathan fillion providing the commentary, and it has one of my favorite lines. “There’s nathan doing a good torture victime for firefly, and there’s me doing a good torture victim for the deer hunter.”
But my single favorite commentary statement is from “date movie” a movie I would not have watched if part of the billing on the cover was something like “and an anti-commentary from two critics who hate the movie.” and the line from the anti-commentary. “I saw a poster that said “from two of the writers of scary movie.” now ’scary movie had 6 writers, and after watching this movie I have so much respect for the other 4.”
Classic.
Used cars was genius.
Two personal favorites for me are the commentary tracks on Evil Dead II and Maniac.
Evil Dead II features Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Gred Nicotero, and Scott Spiegel. It is hilarious!
Maniac (which is not a film I would advice seeing if you have a weak stomach) has the director William Lustig, Luke Walter, Tom Savini, and editor Lorenzo Marinelli. It is funny but also has a lot of stories about making such a low budget guerrilla style film as well as a tribute to the late Joe Spinell and how the film became a success and very controversial. An all around great track in my opinion.
yeah evil dead II is good, especially the parts where they are picking on poor ted.
tim, blech, sam’s brother.
