The Oscar hopes for “The Hurt Locker” just got a little bit brighter.
The film, detailing the exploits of a U.S. bomb removal unit working in Iraq, has been named Best Picture by the Denver Film Critics Society (your humble film critic is a standing member of the new group).
The group also selected Jeff Bridges as Best Actor for his remarkable turn in “Crazy Heart.” Best Actress honors went to Carey Mulligan for her breakthrough work in “An Education.”
Kathryn Bigelow beat out the likes of Jason Reitman (“Up in the Air”) and Quentin Tarantino (“Inglourious Basterds”) to nab Best Director honors.
Other winners include:
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz (“Inglourious Basterds”)
Best Supporting Actress: Mo’Nique (“Precious”)
Best Acting Ensemble: “Star Trek”
You can find the other Rocky winners at DFCS site.
The DFCS selections will likely mirror what we’ll see on Oscar night this March … although “The Hurt Locker” will have a tough time beating back competition like “Avatar” and “Up in the Air.”
