Film actress Julianne Moore showed off a wicked good Boston accent on “30 Rock” this season playing Jack Donaghy’s old Beantown flame.

Turns out she was just getting her feet wet.

The actress is currently fielding offers for a TV project, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Moore has some highly regarded company in her switch to the small screen.

Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (“The Last King of Scotland” came out last week in glorious Blu-ray splendor) is slated to anchor a “Criminal Minds” spin-off for CBS. And Matthew Broderick will star in a new sitcom called “Beach Lane.”

So why are established movie stars “slumming it” on television?

Job security likely leads the list. A steady gig is a steady gig, especially one which doesn’t require flying off to different parts of the world. That’s important for Broderick, who just welcomed twins into his family.

And for women over 40 television can be far more forgiving in terms of the roles available to them.

Television also doesn’t have the taint it once did. For years TV actors couldn’t wait to make the leap to the big screen – and leave TV emoting behind – permanently.

That still happens, witness Kristen Bell’s attempt to be our next rom-com darling.

But TV is far more respected today than in recent years, especially if the actor in question takes on an HBO series which offers A. Gravitas, B. A less hectic shooting schedule and C. Meaty scripts.

Expect more movie stars to give the small screen a try. And let’s hope Moore’s future project is set in Boston.
