Biel too buff for rom-com hijinks?

Actress Jessica Biel was recently named the most “dangerous celebrity to search in cyberspace” by a leading virus protection company.

The Boulder native also could win the “buffest beauty” contest in a walk.

Biel, the co-star of this week’s rom-com “Valentine’s Day,” is an avowed athlete and brings a more, ahem, defined version of beauty to the big screen.

She’s ripped, basically. And people who search for her images online don’t seem bothered.

But how do movie audiences feel about her fit form?

Biel’s career isn’t white hot, but she’s been working steadily in film since breaking free from her TV show launching pad, “7th Heaven.” She showed range in last year’s under-valued “Easy Virtue” and true grit in another unfairly maligned film, “Stealth.”

She’s still looking for that breakout role that will put her in Witherspoon/Heigl/Bullock territory.

Will her defined curves help – or hurt – her career ascent?

What do WWTW readers, both male and female, think? Is Biel redefining the image of on-screen beauty?

I once saw a picture of her on a website that had been photoshopped so that her skin looked green, and the caption read, “Hulk Smash!”

Personally, I think she looks fine (nothing wrong with a little muscle on a woman, as long as she doesn’t end up looking like Chyna). But I wouldn’t say she’s “redefining” anything. One semi-famous actress does not a trend make.

“unfairly maligned film Stealth”
Excuse me. I’ve been reading your blog for several months now and normally appreciate your reviews, but that one comment makes me seriously reevaluate your movie judgement.
Stealth stank.
I like a good “bad” movie as much as anyone. Buckaroo Banzai has a special place on my shelf as does Vibes and many others in between. But Stealth? Really?

Mycroft … I offer no substantial defense. I’m one of the few people writing reviews who gleaned some enjoyment from “Stealth.” I know I’m virtually alone in that sentiment … and I hope you’ll judge me from the total of my work – and not one quirky selection! I’m sure there’s a movie or two you found enjoyable on some level even though all your pals would argue otherwise.

JimmyC … not a trend, perhaps, but maybe a trailblazer of sorts. She’s considered one of the most alluring actresses on the scene, which I think gives her unique appearance extra clout.

I’m ready to see some real women on-screen… as leading ladies! Let’s see a size 10 up there… Even the ‘fat’ Hollywood actresses are size 6’s!

Apparently in Mycroft’s world, if you disagree with him on one movie, that’s enough to make him “seriously reevaluate your movie judgement”. That’s interesting, because in the world I live in, I disagree with people about movies all the time, but it doesn’t make me think any less of them.

Talk about needing to lighten up.

In Mycroft’s defense … some movies really stick in the craw more than others. I remember as a teen walking out of “Hudson Hawk” as grumpy as I’ve ever been after seeing a movie.

Then I heard my pals start talking about how much they liked it … I looked at them and shouted, “you gotta be a moron to like that movie …”

We didn’t talk much on the ride home … and in retrospect I should have been more civil … but sometimes you gotta just say what needs to be said.

My apologies.
I had intended my comment to be a light-hearted jest, but after seeing JimmyC’s comment, I read it again and it was harsh with no sign of intended humor.
I enjoy your site very much and respect your reviews. In fact, I watched Descent based on your recommendation and it was indeed an excellent film.
Thanks for providing the kind defense. To be certain, Stealth is not in the same league of awful as Hudson Hawk. The chemistry between Danny Aiello and Bruce Willis was good, but the rest of that movie was wretched. And I did sit through to the bitter end.

One thing I’ve learned about email and comment boards — tone is almost always lost! The inflections of humor can be easily lost in cyberspace. I figured that was the case with your comments. Thanks for checking out the site … and I’m really psyched you ended up seeing “The Descent.”

That’s why God invented smileys, people! :)

(see?)

(I used to hate them, but I realized it’s better than fouling up)

JimmyCNo Gravatar February 10, 2010 at 6:04 pm

Sorry for the harsh response, Mycroft. I should probably have assumed that your comment was meant sarcastically, but like you said, the tone didn’t come through very well. And I’ve known too many people (especially on the ‘net) who take their movie opinions way too seriously.

And at the risk of getting banned from this site, I actually thought Hudson Hawk was pretty funny, in a campy sort of way. Bruce Willis was surprisingly annoying in it, but the talented supporting cast made the jokes work.

Banned!!!

aww … I’m not sure I even know how to ban someone :)

I’ll watch Jessica Biel in pretty much anything (that I can buy on DVD for £3 or less). I still haven’t seen Stealth, though.

I bet “Powder Blue” will be in the discount bins soon enough, JIC …
