‘This is crazy … this is crazy … this is crazy.”
Or maybe it’s just synergy+nostalgia= new marketing opportunities.
“Hotel Hell Vacation” returns Chevy Chase to his second most famous role – that of the befuddled but well intentioned Clark Griswold.
What, you thought ol’ Sparky was more iconic than Fletch?
The new film, actually a 15-minute short, can be seen at HomeAway.com.
But does the film recapture that “Vacation” magic? Here’s a hint – Cousin Eddie is nowhere to be found.
If “Hotel Hell” had aired three years ago before the web became the go-to place for comedy shorts posted on youtube and Funnyordie.com, then “Hotel Hell” might have been seen as cutting edge content.
Instead, the short offers some mildly amusing sequences fueled by our affection for our unflappable hero.
We rejoin the lives of Clark and Ellen Griswold (ChaseĀ and Beverly D’Angelo) as they embark on a second honeymoon.
It’s Clark’s idea, naturally.
But the duo picked the worst possible hotel for their latest vacation. The snooty desk clerk keeps badgering them to buy platinum towel plans, their room’s ceiling is too short (it’s the Napoleon suite … get it?) and the complimentary water is actually “complementary.”
The “e” means they have to pay for it.
Chase, at 66, has aged as well as can be expected, as has his lovely screen bride. The setup allows Chase to remind us of his affable screen presence, and a few genuine chuckles emerge.
It’s hardly good enough to demand a fifth “Vacation” feature. But as a way to reunite with old friends courtesy of your laptop it’s a diverting 15-minute break.
