Calling out movie critics: Reed spoils ‘The Wolfman’

Calling out movie critics: Reed spoils ‘The Wolfman’

What is it with veteran movie critics? Do they believe their own hype?

First, Roger Ebert transforms from Pulitzer Prize winner to hack political writer and angry Tweet monger.

Now, Rex Reed comes out with a spoiler-laden review of the new movie “The Wolfman.”

Read it for yourself – but only if you want to know exactly how the movie ends.

It’s about time critics get reprimanded for ignoring the golden rule of movie reviewing – thou shalt not reveal too much.

UPDATE: The Online Film Critics Society weigh in with their thoughts — just ignore the single slam against WWTW.

As a rule, I usually read the first paragraph and last of a review. Far too many lazy critics lay out the entire plot line just to fill space without enlightening us with any real opinion. Sadly, Reed’s and Eberts best days are behind them. And, more people are turning to sites like this for honest reviews than are reading anything they have to say.

If I ever goof up like Reed do I’d hope you and other readers would let me have it. I’d deserve it.

And where are the editors? Did anyone read Reed’s piece? It’s not just his fault.

Great point – where are the editors? BTW: This is the best site for under the radar horror movies . Still looking for Pontypool, Deadgirl and Splinter on DirecTV. Thanks for keeping your eyes and mind open.

Will be posting a review of an intriguing new horror DVD later today … it’s mainly for people who like their heads messed with, for lack of a better phrase.

I love sharing good horror flicks with readers … the genre deserves better, and some indie directors are delivering. (although I didn’t recommend Deadgirl even though some other horror sites did :)

Sorry for the Deadgirl mix up. I have a friend, Vincent Guastini, a make-up guy in Hollywood who’s talking up Neighbor. Hear anything? Sorry for getting WAY off topic.

Reed is in the habit of spoilers. He’s the guy at the party who just has to complain about the ending to a circle of guests who haven’t seen the movie. I remember his “Vanilla Sky” review ticking off every plot point!

Rex and certainly Roger need to step aside for the good of film criticism/journalism already…

Get a life, people. If you don’t like the reviewer, don’t read his/her reviews. Just look at RottenTomatoes to get the gist of reviewers’ opinions. PS – Ebert could be 3 days dead and still write more interesting, insightful, informed reviews than the tedious drivel that Christian Toto writes.

Bruce:

A. Stay classy
B. There is no excuse for revealing key plot points in a review. None. And not every one who stumbles onto such a review knows the history of the critic in question.
C. The report card so far – Ebert: One Pulitzer — Toto: None. Hard to debate that fact, but it’s equally hard to defend Ebert’s recent rants. You didn’t even try.
