The dark side of movie talk on the web

The dark side of movie talk on the web

One of the best perks of being a movie fan in the Internet age is engaging with other movie lovers.

WWTW often inspires some great online conversations, and I can take very little credit for it. This site has some savvy readers.

Not every online movie discussion is so rewarding.

Consider the fallout from this negative review of Martin Scorsese’s new film, “Shutter Island,” opening Feb. 19. (The WWTW review will post then.

Keep in mind none of the people commenting have likely seen the film since it hasn’t opened yet. They just have an ax to grind and a movie to defend, sight unseen.

Here are a few pearls of wisdom readers simply had to share with the world:

Put simply u suck for putting a ‘rotten’ in this movie.

Any film reviewer who would rather watch Shia LaBeouf swing around with a group of monkeys over a Scorsese film should find a new profession

Larry King even thinks you’re a hack. (directed at critic David Edelstein — ouch!)

And, my personal favorite:

Yeah, this guy’s a moron of epic proportions. Holding an opinion that goes against the popular one is always the true sign of an idiot.

Sounds like the review consensus is settled, eh?

On a related note – WWTW doesn’t allow profanity and uncivil comments (uncivil being left up to my discretion, but I feel confident readers would agree).

If a nasty comment does sneak through now and then, I apologize. But I do my best to keep the junk out of the site.

It is the same reason why you can go to a prestigious theater or opera house and find profane things written on the bathroom stalls. Anonymity. It allows people the cover to say things they would never say if they were actually in the same room as the person they are directing their comment to.

You’re right, but I’m constantly amazed at how many people have such hate – or plain ol’ stupidity – in their heart.
