‘Hot Tub’ jinxed by the all-too-obvious movie title?

Remember “Snakes on a Plane?”

It was destined to be a smash, one built on a massive Internet campaign and stoked by its very title.

What’s it about? Well, you’ve got these snakes on a plane, you see.

But the film tanked at the box office.

Over the weekend “Hot Tub Time Machine” came in third place with a meager $13.7 haul.

Could the title, which seemed like a brilliant marketing tool, actually have hurt the film’s box office?

WWTW’s guess is the film took dead aim at my demographic – not today’s 18-24 crowd – and paid the price. Many of my Facebook pals were dying to see the film, but perhaps they really meant to say, “we’re dying to rent it in three months.”

Folks who grew up in the ’80s don’t flock to theaters like they once did.

One name, two words that doomed it: Chevy Chase

I’ve just read John Nolte’s review, which saddened me with its assessment that the movie has no real love for 80s. =(

I happen to be the Queen of 80s Nostalgia (at least in my small corner of the world!) and I was willing to pay to see this on the big screen, overpriced popcorn, soda and all . . . but now I think I might rent it in a few months . . . if ever I remember to . . . or maybe catch it on cable when it finally gets there . . . whatever.

I think this was a movie set in the 80s, but it wasn’t targeting the generation who actually remember the 80s. Sure, they cast John Cusack and Chevy Chase for good measure, but that didn’t work and I think the word got out and thus, 3rd place.

Probably more on target that despite the Cusack – Pink combination, the film is not the whip-smart products that were “Grosse Pointe Blank” and “High Fidelity.”

That, and like Ford in the most recent “Indiana Jones,” Cusack is getting a little long in the tooth to play up memories of his 80s persona.

I loved Grosse Pointe Blank – that’s one movie I can watch over and over. In fact, I own it, but I find myself watching it whenever it comes on television.
