It pays to be thin -wafer thin in some instances – if you’re an actress seeking leading roles in Hollywood.
That doesn’t apply to Queen Latifah, apparently.
The Oscar-nominated actress has curves a-plenty, and she doesn’t apologize for any of them.
More importantly, Hollywood doesn’t seem to mind.
Latifah’s latest film, “Just Wright,” casts her as a physical therapist who falls in love with a client, a famous basketball player (hip-hop star Common) she nurses back to health.
Her romantic competition comes in the form of Paula Patton, the svelte beauty last seen playing the helpful teacher in “Precious.”
It’s easy to guess how this story ends, although we’ll have to see for ourselves when it opens in theaters May 14.
Few actresses could pull off playing a calorically challenged heroine who (may) get her man.
Minnie Driver accomplished a similar feat in “Circle of Friends” back in 1995, but she quickly lost weight for subsequent films.
And Renee Zellweger’s two “Bridget Jones” movies asked the actress to pack on the pounds to play the franchise’s neurotic heroine. But Zellweger never weighed as much as Latifah, nor did she keep the weight she gained once cameras stopped rolling.
Few people expect Latifah to fit a preconceived standard of beauty to keep on working in Hollywood. And it’s unlikely that will prevent her from getting gigs.
Being Queen has its privileges.

It’s good to be the Queen.
…although she HAS slimmed down from her original dress size, but hers is an excellent – if likely to be nearly a nonesuch – example.
Il est bon d’ĂȘtre la reine, indeed.
