The folly of a ‘Thomas Crown’ sequel

The folly of a ‘Thomas Crown’ sequel

It’s been 11 years since Pierce Brosnan flirted – and then some – with Rene Russo in “The Thomas Crown Affair.”

And it’s been nearly that long since talk of a sequel began.

Suffice to say we still haven’t seen a “Crown 2,” but Brosnan recently said the sequel is still a go.

Sad.

Brosnan’s “Affair” isn’t a classic, but it’s a smart, sultry film that wrapped in a very tidy fashion. There’s absolutely no need for a sequel.

And, if there was, why has it taken this long to make one?

Here’s Brosnan discussing the sequel’s progress with ComingSoon.net:

“We’ve got the fourth script in and this is the closest we’ve gotten in structure to making sense,” he told us. “It’s very very hard. Now we have the character, it’s not really fleshed out, so we have to work on him, Mr. Crown, and her, Miss Moore, another affair, more art, but it has to be an unexpected surprise.”

How long does it take to flesh out a character? 12 years? More? And didn’t he play the character once – not to mention the 1968 original. Isn’t the character already established?

How many neon signs do you need before you move on to other, more intriguing options?

The more telling truth here is there’s no way the film will include Russo at this point. The actress is in her mid-50s now, and while she’s only about a year or so younger than Brosnan men are allowed to age on screen. Women? Not so much – unless your last name is Streep or Dench.

It’s not fair. It’s not my opinion. It’s just the way Hollywood works.

So will a new “Crown” pair Brosnan with an actress in her 40s or even -gasp – early 50s? Or should Jessica Biel start studying art history in her spare time?

Brosnan is working feverishly of late, drawing out fine performances in “The Matador” (see it if you haven’t) and “The Ghost Writer” (not worth the hype but still a fine turn). Why does he even care about revisiting “Crown?”

Besides, Hollywood will probably “reboot” “The Thomas Crown Affair” before Brosnan’s sequel ever hits theaters.

Oh I absolutely agree with you. Please Pierce don’t make it! I think there was talk about Angelina Jolie being cast and this would be a dreadful mistake too. Most of Pierce’s fans are female and she (Jolie) is not a favourite with many women. I am personally looking forward to The Ghost and it has had good reviews particularly for Brosnan. Stick to doing different things and never go back!
