Quote of the Week: Courtesy of David Duchovny

We’re making [Showtime's 'Californication'] almost in a vacuum. You can’t do that in a movie any more. They have to satisfy too many quadrants. The reason you get ['United States of] Tara’ or ‘Nurse Jackie’ is because talented creative people are getting to do what they do and are not being told by marketers what they should be doing.” – David Duchovny in a chat with film critic Roger Moore.

He’s right. Just consider how many changes/revisions/additional writers so many film screenplays get these days. It’s rare to see a singular artistic vision coming from the film industry, and that’s because studios feel the need to appease as wide an audience as possible.

And, too often, that actually means fewer and fewer people are entertained.

If the ’60s were all about “plastics,” then 2010 and beyond is about “quadrants” – at least to the film industry.

Lately, it’s been television rather than movies that has been the most entertaining. I can’t think of a recent movie that’s been anywhere near as riveting as the sublime “Breaking Bad”. Also, no movie of late has made me laugh as much as “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “South Park”.
