Indie films are judged by a different box office standard than “Shrek Forever After” and “Iron Man 2.”
If they make more than $1 million it can be considered a triumph – while a movie like “Shrek Forever After” is a disappointment for only earning $71 million on opening weekend.
That’s what happens when you tell original stories without car chases, special effects or bankable stars.
Which is why seeing “City Island” earn more than $4 million in its theatrical run so far is good news.
The indie film casts Andy Garcia as a prison guard who moonlights as an actor. His life gets even more complicated when he learns of a son he never knew he had.
The film delivers some big laughs, plenty of heart and the kind of wacky finale that would be embraced by most audiences.
But given the fact that it’s only in roughly 250 theaters nationwide, there’s a good chance it’s not playing in a town near you.
But if it is … give it a tumble, as Dennis Miller might say. It’s Garcia’s best performance in ages and the kind of frothy fun that doens’t make you feel dumber for enjoying it.
