Bay turns to ‘Turtle’ power in reboot

Bay turns to ‘Turtle’ power in reboot

(Guest post by JohnFN)

For those whose ’80s childhoods have not been sufficiently raped, Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes is set to produce a remake of a live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise.

“The producers will begin meetings with writers in the next few weeks. The deal puts Bay in the center of two Paramount franchises, as he started production May 17 on Transformers 3, and is zeroing in on Rosie Huntington-Whitely to replace Megan Fox as love interest for Shia LaBeouf. TMNT, a co-production between Paramount and Nickelodeon, is an outgrowth of the $60 million acquisition made by Nick last October for global rights to the entire Turtles franchise.”

The Ninja Turtles were reborn in the CGI “TMNT” a couple years ago. It was no massive blockbuster, but apparently Hollywood has ran out of other franchises to mine and is banking on the bankability of the nostalgic Turtles.

No word on when Francis Ford Coppola will tackle “The Care Bears” or when Roman Polanski plans to deliver his NC-17 “Strawberry Shortcake.”

Good to see JohnFN contributing here, he’s one of my fav writers and deserves more exposure, IMO.

Re-boots often annoy me as well, although I’d use the word “violation” to describe the effect of having what amounts to a “culture-ectomy” by Hollywood modernizations.

OTOH, there were different versions of the original TMNTs at the time, and the one I was influenced by was the original comics – which were rather more gritty than the TV cartoon version. I wouldn’t mind a re-boot which moved in that direction.

I assume instead of the cute, charming actress who played April the TMNT’s will be joined by a Victoria’s Secrets model with a heart of ice.
