Early movie lessons from Summer 2010

School’s out … for … summer!

But the movie studios – and audiences alike – are learning plenty from the early results from the Summer 2010 movie season.

Some of the biggest hits may still be ahead of us, like “Toy Story 3,” but the initial results reveal plenty about how the season will unfold:

  • “MacGruber” explodes, but not in a good way: It might be awhile before we see another movie based on a “Saturday Night Live” sketch.
  • Grrl power only goes so far: “Sex and the City 2″ drops nearly 60 percent in its second weekend. Insert groan-inducing pun here.
  • Not money in the bank? Sequels, reboots and remakes don’t guarantee great box office.
  • He is invincible: Robert Downey, Jr. can still do no wrong, but overstuffed superhero movies sure can.
  • Go blame ‘Alice:’ The speedy turnover of “Alice in Wonderland” from theaters to DVD might be causing ticket buyers to delay their trip to the cinema. It’s just one reason why overall box office numbers are so anemic this season.

- it already had been a while since the last “SNL” sketch-based film; lesson learned, hopefully
- as suggested above, bad writing trumps sequel-based-built-in audience (almost) every time
- (see above)
- True so far, but with both the writer AND the director going to excess this time, dunno if Downey’s popularity will float the second sequel as well; (costumed superhero) lesson not learned, sadly
- and yet “AiW” ALREADY is in the top 5 highest-grossing films worldwide, of all time. Lesson learned?
