Why Pixar reigns supreme – ‘Toy Story 3′ director’s take
Director Lee Unkrich is in a unique position to share what makes Pixar films so special.
Unkrich joined Pixar Animation Studios in April 1994, and worked on a number of projects over the years before directing “Toy Story 3.”
Here, he tries to answer the simple question – “what’s the secret to Pixar’s success?” The answer comes from a Q&A conducted by the marketing team behind the movie, but I thought it was still worth your while.
Unkrich: Pixar is great because the creative environment is set up so that we are free to make a lot of mistakes. It’s safe to screw up. We know that making mistakes is part of the process. It just makes the movies better. We don’t lock ourselves into to making a movie of our first idea. At Pixar we get to keep pounding away on these stories, working at them until they are as great as they possibly can be. So the film is this kind of living document that we are constantly updating.
