DVDs of the Week: ‘Cops,’ ‘Losers’ and the ‘Mother’ of all defenders

  • The Losers” – A group of U.S. Special Forces is double crossed, and that’s where the fun really starts in this adaptation of the comic book series. The bustling cast includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Jason Patric and future Captain America Chris Evans . Blu-ray extras include “Zoe and the Losers”; “Band of Buddies”: “OPS Training”; “The Losers: Action-Style Storytelling” and one deleted scene. Not reviewed by WWTW.
  • The Runaways” – The early days of dark-haired rocker Joan Jett are explored in this box office disappointment. Kristen Stewart stars as a young Jett while former child star Dakota Fanning plays against type as Cherie, her musical partner in crime. Blu-ray extras include a commentary track by Joan Jett, Kristen Stewart, and Dakota Fanning and “Plugged In: Making the Film.” Not reviewed by WWTW.
  • Cop Out” – This buddy cop parody is 20 years too late and as witless as a “Police Academy” sequel. Bruce Willis teams up with Tracy Morgan to play a pair of cops tracking down a stolen baseball card – and riffing with little comic payoff. Only the combustible comic energy supplied by Seann William Scott salvages a few scenes. Blu-ray extras include Maximum Movie Mode with Kevin Smith and Seann William Scott; Extended scenes and outtakes; Picture-in-picture moments with Kevin Smith and Seann William Scott and Wisdom from the S*** Bandit.
  • Mother” – South Korean director Bong Joon-ho of “The Host” fame delivers a wholly different tale of a parent’s devotion to her child. The titular Mother rushes to her simple son’s defense when he’s accused of murdering a local girl. The film’s off-beat humor melds beautifully with the darker storyline afoot. The bountiful Blu-ray extras include smart behind-the-scenes information about the film and its director as well as short reflecting on the film’s orchestral score. WWTW review to be posted 7/21/10.
