But plenty of summer movies have come and gone, and it’s high time to dole out grades for the films we’ve already enjoyed.
Or, is more often the case, endured.
“Toy Story 3″ (A) Woody, Buzz and the gang return, and did anyone really think the folks at Pixar would let us down?
“Iron Man 2″ (B-) This one hurt. The second “Iron” installment has flashes of excellence – when Tony met Ivan, for starters – but too many characters and subplots threatened to sink the franchise.
“Prince of Persia/The A-Team” (B-) Mindless summer fun, but audiences rejected these franchise wannabes.
“Robin Hood” (C+) Please don’t make a sequel … please don’t make a sequel.
“Get Him to the Greek” (B) Yes, Russell Brand belongs on the big screen, but “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” remains the superior laugh-getter.
“Splice” (B-) Great start, lousy finish. Sci-fi fans get so few quality movies to savor, making the film’s crash and burn ending such a downer.
“Predators” (B-) They don’t call ‘em “B-Movies” for nothing. Sank 71 percent in its second week of release, meaning word of mouth is more deadly than the creature’s shoulder weapons.
“Jonah Hex” (C+) Sliced and diced until it barely reached the 81 minute mark. That’s not a summer blockbuster. It’s a trailer on steroids.
“The Karate Kid” (B) A new Smith to rule the box office. Extra points for not trashing a beloved ’80s films.
“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” (B-) One of these days a “Twilight” film will be good. But we’re running out of time – and books.
“The Last Airbender” (D) Goodnight, M. Night.
NOTE: WWTW didn’t see “Sex and the City 2,” the most maligned movie of the year – to date. I’ll wait for the Blu-ray to suffer?? in silence. (Photo: The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” underwhelmed at the box office this summer)
Summer Movie Report Card – Part 1
Summer isn’t over yet. Hardly.
