‘Repo Men’ – The Blu-ray extras

Repo Men Blu ray

The spring science fiction entry “Repo Men” seemed ready to ride the zeitgeist all the way to box office glory.

The timing couldn’t be better – the film looks to a near future in which people pony up big money for artificial organs.

But if they can’t keep up with the payments, the organs get repossessed the hard way.

The film tanked all the same, failing to click with either audiences or critics.

It still represents a bold way to tackle the modern health care debate, and the film’s Blu-ray release comes equipped with some intriguing extras.

The film, which comes in both a theatrical and unrated version, delivers the standard array of deleted/extended scenes. But some of the excised clips could have added depth to the existing story.

Or, in one case, a welcome sense of humor. One scene shows a woman flashing the main characters and yelling, “Paid in full” regarding her enhanced bosom.

Other scenes are less enthralling, like our “heroes” bonding over bad poetry. A sequence in which the classic Monty Python sketch involving live organ donors might have proved a bit too meta for the final cut.

The extras also include a series of commercials for The Union, the cold-hearted corporation at the heart of the story. The spots range from inspired to confused, but they’re giddy all the same.

The best extra, however brief, involves the CGI tweaks to make “Repo Men” happen. Or, rather, the massive computer reworking of the film as shot. We see plenty of green as the “before” imagery rolls out, with a special effects techie describing how some critical scenes came to be.
