Hard to imagine a James Ivory film starring Anthony Hopkins could stir up so little attention, but that’s precisely the reception “The City of Your Final Destination” received during its brief theatrical release earlier this summer.
The handsome drama leads off this week’s lineup of DVD and Blu-ray releases.
- “The City of Your Final Destination” – An ambitious grad student pesters the family of a deceased author to let him pen an official biography of the celebrated scribe. Anthony Hopkins plays the author’s gay sibling, and his scenes represent “Destination’s” best moments. Laura Linney lowers the temperature as the author’s widow, but she can’t do much to make the protagonist anything but a cipher. The DVD features two extras – select scenes with commentary and a featurette dubbed, “Behind the Scenes: Sorting It Out in Ocho Rios.”
- “Furry Vengeance” – Brendan Fraser goes the kiddie route – again – in this poorly reviewed comedy with an eco-perspective. Fraser plays a developer who meets his match when the animals set to be displaced by his project plot to stop him and his crew. Not reviewed by WWTW.
- “Nanny McPhee” (Blu-ray) -This delightful children’s film takes full advantage of the high-def format, but it’s story is one that will entertain no matter the pixel count. Emma Thompson stars as a magical, mole-laden nanny who helps out a family in need. The set design is flat out gorgeous, and the Blu-ray extras are bountiful. Expect a commentary track with director Kirk Jones and the film’s child cast, a look at the makeup needed to turn the lovely Thompson into the frightening Nanny, Casting the Children, deleted scenes and the always popular gag reel.
