Not all B movies are created equal

Not all B movies are created equal

Machete Danny Trejo

It’s easy to walk out of a screening of “Piranha 3d” and say, “it must be easy to make a good B movie.”

Think again.

The formula may be firmly in place – blood, babes and high body counts all help. But it takes skill to tell an unsavory story and do it well. It’s why “Piranha 3D” was such an unexpected delight.

And then there’s “Machete,” the new Robert Rodriguez film aiming for the same “Grindhouse” style of movie making he dabbled in three years ago via “Planet Terror.”

But while “Terror” proved a nasty treat, “Machete” is as clumsy as Andre the Giant maneuvering around a dilettante’s ball. Turns out shlock movie making is an art, not a paint-by-numbers assignment.

Note: Will post a link to my “Machete” review over at PajamasMedia.com as soon as it goes live.

I’ll check it out when it comes around on Netflix, but this just looks terrible. Who greenlights this garbage? A stupid exploitation send-up cannibalized from a three minute fake trailer? Yeesh.
