DVDs of the Week: SNL skit writ too large

Looks like a mullet-haired hero might have put the nail in the coffin of “Saturday Night Live” skit movies.

And it’s unlikely anyone will mourn their passing now that Wayne and Garth are too long in the tooth for a reunion.

“MacGruber,” one of this week’s new Blu-ray and DVD releases, actually held some promise. But the film tanked at the box office and reminded us not all 5-minute skits translate to the big screen.

  • MacGruber” Will Forte is no Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase or Will Ferrell. He couldn’t bring the laughs – or an audience -with “The Brothers Solomon” and now his first starring vehicle is another lame attempt at “SNL” star-making. Forte’s “MacGruber” character tries to find a supervillain (Val Kilmer) who stole a nuclear weapon. The Blu-ray extras include a deleted scene and a gag reel.
  • Killers” Katherine Heigl plays a single stunner who meets the man of her dreams – Ashton Kutcher – but he turns out to be a secret agent. The extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette, plus deleted/extended/alternate scenes not shown theaters. Not reviewed by WWTW.
  • Solitary Man” – Michael Douglas plays a failed businessman whose road to redemption is hitting the same old potholes that wrecked his financial house – and personal life – the first time around. The Blu-ray extras include a making of featurette as well as commentary from Douglas and other behind the scenes talent on the film. Not reviewed by WWTW.
  • That Evening Sun” – Hal Holbrook sinks his teeth into another meaty role, that of an old-timer who flees his retirement home to reclaim his farmstead. The Blu-ray extras include “That Tennessee Sun…” The Making of “That Evening Sun,” “The Art and Craft of ‘That Evening Sun,” cast and crew interviews plus a trailer. Not reviewed by WWTW.

Just watched the first 20 minutes of “That Evening Sun”…Not a fan. We took it off and may return to it tomorrow (then ship it back to the Red Envelope Factory for a new one).

So far I see a depressing, slow character development gothic that I don’t think I want to invest my down-time on.

Am I wrong? Even Holbrook was boring me. Should I try to watch it again?

I didn’t catch up with “Sun” yet … but go with your gut. I do know Holbrook caught some Best Actor buzz last year, but it never really built into something concrete.
