When sex doesn’t sell: ‘The Virginity Hit’

Virginity Hit movie poster

Don’t you hate it when a cultural saw falls by the waste side?

“The Virginity Hit” felt like it could be the Fall’s sleeper hit. The no-budget enterprise blends “American Pie” tomfoolery with reality television, but the opening grosses were sadder than a stood-up prom date.

“Hit” drew roughly $300,000 in its opening weekend on 700 screens, according to boxofficemojo.com.

Poor ticket sales can be blamed on a variety of factors, but when WWTW saw the movie’s poster last night at a screening for “Let Me In” I couldn’t help but be underwhelmed.

If you’ve got a sexy comedy to push, push sex. The hand gestures in the poster barely rise to the level of clever. A slicker ad campaign might have taken the poster’s catch phrase and made it resonate.

Has anyone out there taken the “Hit?”

What’s with all the fake documentaries lately? Virginity Hit, Catfish, I’m Still Here. Hey filmmakers, if you want to have a hit on your hands, try making a movie for a change instead of a stunt.

Stunts are easier … and cheaper, too.

Not true, EP: Best in Show is very funny, too.

Fair enough. I’ll rephrase: There can be only one mockumentary rule … it must have Christopher Guest involved. For Your Consideration doesn’t count, though. Just couldn’t get into that one.
