Too many character actors never get their Richard Jenkins moment.
Jenkins enjoyed a rare leading man role in 2008’s “The Visitor” and nabbed an Oscar nomination in the process.
Elias Koteas deserves a similar chance.
The hard-working actor has been a film mainstay since the late 1980s, primarily slotted in the character actor role. His rugged features, just a hair south of classically handsome, lend themselves well to both villains and heroes – and the glorious shades in between.
Consider his flexible turn as a high school tough in “Some Kind of Wonderful” and, decades later, his relentless cop in the new film “Let Me In.”
This year alone he’s popped up in “Shutter Island” and “The Killer Inside Me,” and his 2011 slate appears equally full.
Great character actors never go out of style. And Koteas, with his ability to evoke a tranquil strength touched by sadness should secure him work indefinitely. And, someday, a savvy director will decide Koteas deserves a feature all his own.

So many great roles, Ararat and Greatest Game Ever Played two faves. Nice call, CT!
You write an article about Elias Koteas and forget to mention that he was in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Blasphemy!
What Shane said.
Koteas has been one of my favorite working actors since the ’90s. He was fantastic in The Thin Red Line and The Prophecy as well as the films already mentioned.
I watched “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Cyborg 2″ incessantly because of Koteas.
And name me a bad movie with a better cast than “Cyborg 2?” Angelina Jolie, pre-plastic surgery, maybe the most beautiful creature on earth, along side Koteas, Jack Palance and Billy Drago.

Ford Fairlane. Pre-anything Angelina couldn’t zip Lauren Holly’s dress. She might enjoy it, but she still couldn’t.
What was the movie about the car death fetish? That was a strange movie, with a lot of great performances.
He’s a very interesting image on film, I think he could be in starring roles, and I think his role in “The Prophecy” WAS a starring role.
Crash (1996).
