Conservative doc earns little ‘Money’

Conservative documentaries are as common as ribald comedies starring Dame Judi Dench.

So right of center audiences should have flocked to see “I Want Your Money,” the new film excoriating the Obama administration’s fiscal policies. But the film earned $279,000 over its first weekend of release on roughly 500 screens according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Don’t think film studios aren’t paying attention to that figure.

“Money” lacked a healthy marketing budget, and major media outlets gave the film a fraction of the love afforded to films like Oliver Stone’s “South of the Border” (which earned $198,600 but never had more than 12 theaters at its widest release point).

But the film should have leveraged conservative talk radio and the right side of the blogosphere, two potent ways to spread the word about a particular film. Instead, it reinforces the argument conservative audiences won’t support ideological projects, saving their ticket money for faith-based features like “The Blind Side” and “The Passion of the Christ.”

I would have liked to have seen it but, 1: I didn’t know it was out yet and 2: It’s not playing in my area.

I wonder if the film would have benefited from being on Video on Demand outlets … that way people across the country could see it at their leisure.
