Getting cast as the new Capt. James T. Kirk could make a young actor’s career – or send him hurtling back to obscurity.
Chris Pine handled the gig of a lifetime without breaking a sweat.
But is the handsome actor a one phaser pony?
He gets the chance to burnish his movie star credentials with “Unstoppable,” the new thriller co-starring Denzel Washington opening Nov. 12. The duo team up to stop a runaway train heading for a heavily populated town. It’s based on a true story, but the really good news for Pine is that he doesn’t get overshadowed by Washington.
That might be more impressive than filling out that Starfleet uniform without smirking.
It still might not be enough to assure Pine a robust film career – even if we see a “Star Trek 2 … 3 and 4.”

It’s all about choices for most actors. Make the right ones and suddenly the tabloids care about the way you eat your cereal – and you’ll ascend to the A-list.
Pick a series of clunkers and you’ll be lucky to land a series on the CW.
So far, “Unstoppable” seems like a smart pickup, and teaming up with Elizabeth Banks is never a bad thing.

Even pre-Star Trek, Pine was showing an interesting range- playing a redneck psycho killer in Smokin’ Aces and a long-haired winemaker in Bottle Shock. He definitely knows how to play the “wild, rebellious young guy” persona, but I’ll be curious to see how he handles more clean-cut roles in movies like this as his career progresses.
Bottle Shock is a nice little movie … underwhelming but easy to digest. If “Unstoppable” is any indication, Pine will do A-OK playing a more conventional hero (will post my review tomorrow morn)
