That Facebook movie is turning into something different – that movie with a deafening Oscar buzz.
The Washington, D.C. Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) just named “The Social Network” the Best Picture of 2010. The film, starring Jesse Eisenberg as the mercurial creator of the social media platform, also walked away with Best Director (David Fincher) and Best Adapted Screenplay honors from the D.C. based critics groups.
The news comes hot on the heels of “Network’s” Best Picture win from the National Board of Review last week.
WAFCA also celebrated director Christopher Nolan’s maddeningly complex summer release “Inception,” giving it four WAFCA awards including Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Score.
WWTW is a proud member of WAFCA, and while I didn’t agree with every film chosen this year I’m happy to report none of the selections made me crinkle my nose in alarm, “Crash” style. The biggest shock comes in the Best Actress category, where a nominee who seems like a lock got trounced by a neophyte.
Here are the rest of the WAFCA winners:
- Best Actor: Colin Firth, “The King’s Speech”
- Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence, “Winter’s Bone’
- Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale, “The Fighter”
- Best Animated Feature: “Toy Story 3″
- Best Documentary: “Exit Through the Gift Shop”
- Best Foreign Language Film: “Biutiful”
- Best Acting Ensemble: “The Town”

The “Best Animated Feature” category will be the tool by which the Academy shafts this year’s best film.
‘Nuff said.
You’re on target, John. And it’s a shame since this year doesn’t have a breakaway Best Pic nominee, and it would be a wonderful time to honor the greatness of Pixar. And, most importantly, it wouldn’t be a pity vote. Toy Story 3 deserves serious recognition.
