Looks like “The Social Network” won’t be walking away with all the Oscar buzz this season.
The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) gave a record-number 12 nominations to “Black Swan,” a portrait of an artist on the proverbial edge, via its annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.
The film earned huzzahs for Best Picture, Best Actress (Natalie Portman), Best Supporting Actress (Mila Kunis) and Best Director (Darren Aronofsky) among its honors.
“True Grit,” the Coen brothers stab at reinventing the 1969 John Wayne classic, lassoed 11 nominations as did “The King’s Speech.” And “Inception,” the deliriously inventive action pic from director Christopher Nolan, nabbed 10 nominations.
The 16th annual Critics Choice Movie Awards winners will be announced Jan. 14, 2011 at 9 PM ET/PT at the Hollywood Palladium. VH1 will broadcast the gala live on the network.
“The Social Network” wasn’t forgotten by BFCA members (a group which includes WWTW). The David Fincher-directed drama about the dawn of Facebook scored nine nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg).
Not all critics groups serve as clear-eyed Oscar prognosticators, but the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards doubles as a year-end crystal ball. For example, all four major acting category winners at the Academy Awards in 2010 were first Critics’ Choice Movie Awards winners in the same categories.
