Comedian Sue Costello’s 15 minutes of fame seemed to end when her eponymous Fox sitcom got canceled in 1998.
Costello went on to land a choice spot on “Last Comic Standing,” and she also kept hammering away at the comedy club circuit.
That’s where WWTW caught her two years ago in a tiny Boston comedy club. During her act she mentioned successfully auditioning for a role in the upcoming drama “The Fighter,” and she sounded as if the part could be a breakthrough for her.
The experience provided some big laughs, and Costello seemed genuinely thrilled about the gig.
I caught “The Fighter” earlier this week, and while the buzz on the film’s Oscar chances are deafening I was also eager to see Costello’s work in the movie.
Good thing I didn’t blink.
She plays one of several girls who haunt the crack house where Christian Bale’s character spends his leisure time. She didn’t have a line of dialogue nor was she offered any close-ups.
It’s likely the role was bigger when it first came her way, and parts were possibly left behind on the cutting room floor awaiting the DVD extras treatment.
But I confess to feeling sad about seeing her reduced to essentially a walk-on part. She’s a scrappy stand-up, and I bet her talents could be used by a director eager to let her loose.

She coulda been a contendah
