Can Depp’s ‘Rango’ get 2011 off on the right animated foot?

Johnny Depp’s got some ’splaining to do after his tepid turn in “The Tourist.”

He’ll have plenty of chances to make amends. He’s already got a new “Pirates” romp and “The Rum Diary” set for release before year’s end.

But WWTW is really looking forward to “Rango,” a new animated film featuring Depp’s idiosyncratic pipes. The film, out March 4, offers some dazzling character design we haven’t seen before. Never mind all those fuzzy creatures, monsters and toys sprung to life. Why not spend some time with a crooked neck lizard and friends?

The trailer is an out-and-out hoot. Let’s hope the finished film does it justice.

Rango looks really good. I can’t wait to see it.

On another note, The Rum Diary was written by Hunter S. Thompson, not Elmore Leonard.

Shane’s right.

Elmore Leonard wrote Rum Punch (filmed as Jackie Brown), which must be what you were getting it mixed up with.

I have a Great Wall of China sized mental block about Rum Diary/Rum Punch. Fixed now … apologies.

HA HA HA, we’ll never accept your apology Toto!

Just kidding, no apology necessary. I have never read Rum Punch, maybe I should.
