The only lesson learned from the Globes

The only lesson learned from the Globes

This self-confessed film fanatic didn’t watch a minute of the Golden Globes ceremony last night.

Why bother? The event isn’t the best prognosticator for the big prize – the Oscar. That honor falls to the recent Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

And, by nominating films like “The Tourist” and placing “The Kids Are All Right” in the “comedy” division, the Globes once again hurt its own credibility. That doesn’t even mention the award’s checkered history or recent charges of flimflammery.

About the only thing the annual gala gets right is its host. Ricky Gervais apparently skewered anyone and everything in his path – including the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the folks who do the Golden Globe voting.

I’m not sure I want to see an Oscar host go the Fully Gervais. As corny as it sounds, I’d like the Academy Awards ceremony to maintain some decorum. But it’s Gervais’ go-for-broke spirit that’s missing from the Oscar hosting gig. And it’s something that would add precious life – and ratings – to the broadcast.

Gervais was nothing short of brilliant. No sacred cows were spared.

I thought he was hilarious and love that he pushed the envelope. I also thought that the exact right actors, television shows and movies won in many cases.

The problem with the Golden Globes is that people want and expect it to be a predictor of what will happen on Oscar night. That goes for the HFPA, most of the actors, and the American public in general, but ultimately, this is an entirely different (and different kind of) awards show.

Taken for what it is, I rather enjoy it.

Its just a liberal crowd and as such do not want to be the brunt of the jokes. They are much more happier when the host bashes the conservatives no matter how irrelevant that is for an Hollywood Liberal democrat award show. Hell, even Screenwriter Sorkin made a jab at us everyday folks intelligence or lack of it with his elitist comment obviously thinking he is one of the superior minds.

I am second to none in my enjoyment of seeing liberal Hollywood types mocked and insulted, but I can’t for the life of me see why anyone thinks Gervais is funny. The guy sucks.

I saw an interesting article from the British press about Gervais. They said he was, in essense, a Court Jester holding up the mirror of self reflection to the Royals (in this case, Hollywood). That sums it up for me. Gervais was genius and now will have a world-wide cult following after showing the thin-skinned fools who star in America’s movies.
