Director James Cameron proved 3-D movies could be much more than a gimmick with “Avatar.”
His 2009 smash delivered the kind of 3-D visuals even cynics could applaud. That was then, before a crush of hasty 2-D upgrades and limp 3-D films watered down the enthusiasm “Avatar” built up. So can Cameron raise the bar on his favorite film gimmick one more time?
This weekend audiences can check out “Sanctum,” a new action film with Cameron listed as an executive producer. He may not have been behind the camera, but he’s talking up the movie as well as the 3-D format all over again.
That means there’s more riding on the new film than a standard 3-D event film. If “Sanctum” impresses audiences, they may be more willing to shell out extra cash for 3-D content like “The Green Lantern” and “Thor,” big-budget films heading our way later this year.
“Sanctum” follows a team of underwater cave divers on a mission fraught with danger. It opens Feb. 4.

One four letter word needed to decribe this movie. BOMB.
Aleric? You know that Toto loves “Decent.” He likely see’s this as “Decent” in 3d.
I think the big problem with 3d, is that the 3d moviesI’ve seen, (avatar) focused on the HUGE grand images. I think if a more effective practice of realistic sensation would be better.
3 D = F A D
I’m not holding my breath for this one, although I recently read a book about cave diving and found the subject fascinating. I’m aways a little suspicious when the cast is a group of people I’ve never heard of before.
I’ve heard of a few of them. It’s more of a TV movie cast. I’m thinking that either they skimped on names so that almost all the budget could go on FX, or that it was a little project that attracted Cameron’s attention and became big because of him.
