Spidey goes on sci-fi tangent

Never Let Me Go Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield will soon be known as the man who climbs walls in a funny red suit, but last year he added a somber sci-fi feature to his resume.

Never Let Me Go,” based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, seemed like certain Oscar bait but mixed reviews and a sour box office reception doomed its chances. The story follows three boarding school residents who discover they share a shocking secret.

WWTW was similarly unimpressed despite a cunning story and the contributions of its youthful cast – including Mr. Garfield.

The film’s Blu-ray edition, available Feb. 1, features on-set photography by director Mark Romanek as well as the featurette, “The Secrets of ‘Never Let Me Go.’”

This was actually one of my favorite movies of the year and I was quite disappointed to see that it didn’t make the list.

I definitely would have swapped it out for 127 Days. That’s a solid movie, but I don’t think it’s Oscar worthy.
