Super Bowl? More like Movie Bowl

Captain America Chris Evans

People watch the Super Bowl for the commercials as much as the big game itself.

And if that means suffering through another quasi-titillating GoDaddy.com commercial, so be it.

This Sunday, movie fans will have an added incentive for skipping a bathroom break between first downs. The Super Bowl broadcast will feature a record-setting 14 movie commercials, including peeks at “Thor,” “Rio” and “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.”

The biggest draw should be our first look at Chris Evans, or as he’ll be known this summer, “Captain America: The First Avenger.” The film, set during World War II, hits theaters in July and represents the final piece in the runup to 2012’s superhero bonanza “The Avengers.

Can Evans pivot from playing Johnny Storm in two “Fantastic Four” films to embodying Marvel Comics’ most patriotic do-gooder?

Other previews of note include:

  • Rango” – The animated lizard voiced by Johnny Depp looks like a winner based on the early trailers.
  • Rio” – This Super Bowl spot requires a little hustle but the payoff could be huge. The 30-second “Rio” clip will include a frame with a special code embedded into it that can give viewers access to a special level in the popular “Angry Birds” video game. I’m already lost, but for some viewers this will undoubtedly be a real treat. The secret level will allow players to enter a sweepstakes, with the grand prize being a a trip to attend “Rio’s” world premiere in Rio de Janeiro on March 22.  That same day, Fox and Rovio launch the highly anticipated “Angry Birds Rio” app.
  • Super 8” – The movie marks a can’t miss collaboration between writer/director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg
