‘Four minutes to Wapner …’

Rain Man Blu ray

It’s rare for a movie to instantly insert itself into the culture, spawn a series of catch phrases and win Best Picture.

Rain Man” managed all three.

The 1988 gem, out this week on Blu-ray, earned Dustin Hoffman a richly deserved Oscar. But watch it again to see just how good Tom Cruise is as Raymond’s unctuous brother. It’s hard to share the screen with Hoffman during moments like the one featured below, but Cruise manages just fine.

Between this, Color of Money and Born on the Fourth of July, Cruise was poised to make the leap. Les Grossman aside, wherefore art thou, Mr. Mapother? Oh, yeah, that little “religion.”

Hmmm. I wonder what that says about me. I have seen many a Tom Cruise movie, but not Rain Man or the ones Eric listed either.
