It’s hard not to feel a little sorry for Tom Sherak.

Who’s he? Sherak is President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, better known as the fellow with the “kick me” sign on his back following the disastrous Oscar telecast on Feb. 27.

Sherak braved a few questions from thewrap.com this week, but one answer took this movie blogger’s breath away.

Here’s Sherak discussing the weaknesses of this year’s hosting tandem, James Franco and Anne Hathaway:

“I think what was missing from the show was someone who’s used to coming back from a break and dealing with what just happened with a spontaneous joke. Because they’re not comedians, we didn’t get that.”

So … Mr. Oscar himself is only now realizing you need a comedian to spin material on the fly and make for a more dynamic broadcast?

Don’t tell Sherak, but spending 80 percent of the evening giving out awards that virtually no home viewer cares about is also a lousy idea.

Do you think that much of the problem in the industry, of which the Oscars are a small part of, is the result of group think?

It’s so entrenched I don’t know what or who to blame. But I can point a finger at Sherak and say, without hesitation, he needs to take a step back and re-evaluate the show.

Hoping you forwarded your Scorsese suggestion.

He only realized it now that the show needs to be saved? Man, I’m feeling pessimistic about next year.
